End of June, 2010

Dear Amigos,

I am writing to tell you that on the 30th of June we come to the official end of yet another membership year in the in the twenty year history of the Amigos de Música. I am sure that many of you will have noticed that our final concert takes place on July 3rd, three days after the end of the Amigos year but as you would expect, the date will still count as part of your existing membership.

What an amazing year we have had, although I have to confess that we kicked off to a rather disappointing start in September with the first concert from Sandro Bartoli. However, we soon recovered and went on to enjoy those stunning Paul Crossley Master Classes and the two resulting concerts, all of which was made possible by generous sponsorship from the Mundo Crastino Meliori Foundation. Joana Ballmann demonstrated her progress at the Conservatoire in Cologne for us after the Annual General Meeting. The two Anas played excellent Piano for four hands. We enjoyed lots romantic of Chopin by candleight from Piers Lane. The Duo Mecina fairly sizzled. Anne Kaasa played like a dream and in May we were able to listen to the wonderful playing of Jack Liebeck and Katya Apekisheva and in early June we dressed up and celebrated the first glorious 20 years of Amigos collaboration with the Cultural Centre.

This time last year the financial markets were beginning to move into the first phase of this seemingly never ending crisis. No one could predict then what is going to happen in the year ahead and indeed one year down the line and we still seem to be no further out of the woods. But as regards the Amigos and remembering that we had chosen 2009 as the year to increase our subscription rate, not one Amigo left us for that reason and more encouraging still, the total amount of additional donations received has never been higher. Thank you for that and good news as you will notice on the membership form, the rate for 2010/2011 remains unchanged.

By the time you receive this we shall only have the two Pål Lindtner Eide concerts to look forward to on the 30th of June and the 3rd of July. From there we move officially into next year, beginning with considerable style and panache with a return visit from Yevgeny Sudbin on the 24 & 25th September and on the 20th & 23rd of October we must look forward to the debut concerts from pianist Constantin Sandu and Horia Vacaresco, violin.

High summer cannot be far away now and I take this opportunity to thank you for your support last year and wish all the Amigos and their families a long relaxing July and August whether the time is spent in Portugal or in homelands throughout Europe.

Kind regards,

ASSOCIAÇÃO DE AMIGOS DE MÚSICA DE SÃO LOURENÇO

20th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION DINNER

8th May, 2010

Dear Amigos,

You will remember that some time ago I wrote to tell you that we were planning to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the Amigos de Música with a rather special dinner at Vila Monte near Moncarapacho. While the response has been fairly good, it has also been suggested that perhaps we should have thought of holding this very special event closer to home. To that end we have made the decision to cancel the original plan and replace it with the following which I hope you will agree will make for a much more enjoyable evening.

Instead of holding the event at Vila Monte we now propose to celebrate the occasion at home. In other words, the evening will now take place at the São Lourenço Cultural Centre where we have arranged to have an excellent dinner professionally catered for by the well know Gisela and Ad Matthijs of Fine Dining in Almancil.

The date and time remain the same – 4th June 7.00 pm. The Black tie dress code remains the same. The price remains the same, 60 Euros for Amigos, 65 for guests. The musical entertainment remains unchanged, in fact the whole evening begins to look a whole lot better.

Marie as always has been very encouraging in this change of plan and having had the good fortune to have dined Chez Gisela on several occasions in the past, I am confident that the food and wine will be more delicious and the service superb. The evening will be more relaxed and the ambiance more intimate.

I hope you find these changes to the original plans exciting and acceptable; I cannot for the life of me imagine why we did not think of it before.

Kind regards,

20th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION DINNER
CENTRO CULTURAL 7PM FRIDAY, 4TH JUNE 2010
The Amigos de Música was founded in 1990 and by then the Cultural Centre had been established for nearly ten years. The dedicated purpose of the Amigos was then, and is now, to underwrite the cost of the musical activities which take place there. The Amigos are also pledged to support and encourage young Portuguese musicians. As serious and worthy as all that may sound, being an Amigo is also rather fun. Yes, we still we do still cover all the costs of the concerts and yes, we have given several aspiring young musicians a helping hand, but probably more importantly, we have had the joy of hearing live music played in a quite enchanting location in the company of our friends and fellow Amigos.
To mark our 20th Anniversary, on the 4th of June we will hold a celebratorydinner at the Cultural Centre. The evening will begin at 7 o’clock with a welcome drink on the terrace which will be accompanied by a little live music. To follow, we have arranged to have an excellent dinner professionally catered for by the well know Gisela and Ad Matthijs of Fine Dining in Almancil.

The cost of the evening will be 60 Euros for Amigos and 65 Euros for Guests. Cheques should be sent directly to me please, to be in my hands not later than the 17th May.
This should be a lovely elegant evening and I look forward to seeing you there..

Dear Amigos,

Refreshing is the word that springs to mind when looking back on the visit from the Duo Mecina last month. They are a very bright young pair and gave us two distinctly different evenings both of which were fresh and entertaining. And I must take this chance to thank Loes and Henk Vooijs for their ever generous kindness in providing the musicians with two of their lovely Vale Verde apartments. Next week we shall welcome the return of Anne Kaasa to the Cultural Centre. The last time Anne came to us was in September 2007 when, with kind support from the Norwegian Embassy, we marked the centenary of the passing of her fellow countryman, Edward Grieg. This time we shall celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Fryderyk Chopin in the second half of both concerts. In the first half of the Wednesday concert she will play Bach and Beethoven and in Saturdays, Ravel. Incidentally, it was through Anne that we were introduced to our protégé Joana Ballmann, so who knows what unexpected delights she will bring this time?

I hope everyone has made a note to keep the evening of Friday 23rd April free when at 7.00 pm there will be an Amigos only piano recital given by António Pedro Cebola. António you will remember was the undoubted star of our Paul Crossley Piano Masterclass concerts last October. He will play a short program of about one hour without an interval. Liquid refreshments will be served but there but there will be no buffet. We still have to be a little mysterious as to the purpose of this concert, particularly as even António has no idea what is going to happen, but as a clue, try The Royal College of Music and the thought of the Amigos playing a very positive and proactive part in this young mans future. He will play the Bach/Busoni Chaconne, the memorable Ondine and Scarbo from Ravels Gaspard de la Nuit and the Liszt Sonata in B minor. Whatever you do, do not miss wonderful evening and please call Christina to reserve a seat. The concert should end a little after 8.00 pm, in perfect time to join friends for a bite of supper.

Plans are well in hand for our 20th Birthday celebrations on Friday 4th June which will take place at the Relais & Chateau Vila Monte near Moncarapacho. The location is excellent and I have no doubt that we can look forward to a glorious dinner with fine wines on a warm summers evening. I am attaching a separate invitation for you where you will discover menu details and offers of overnight accommodation. I hope the date fits in with any travel plans you might have already made and that you will be able to join our merry band when we mark two successful decades of enjoyable and worthwhile collaboration with the Centro Cultural de São Lourenço.

In May we shall see the return of Katya Apekisheva, piano, and Jack Liebeck, violin. I love these people. They work so well together and they work so hard. They have both made individual CDs which have been critically acclaimed and as well as all that, they are delightful young people. The last time they came to play for us was almost two years ago in June 2008. If you heard them then you are sure to come back to hear them again. If you didn’t, well, now’s your chance.

Kind regards,

Barry

Anne’s actress daughter Kjersti Kaasa and Anne have performed together at a concert in Belém in late 2007 organised by Portugals’s Antena 2 radio station in which Kjersti read some poetic monologs from Peer Gynt whilst Anne provided the piano accompaniment. More recently Anne played the entire Peer Gynt suite on Antena 2 in a program that was recorded. She has a repertory that extends from Bach to contemporary music. Anne’s recordings of the works of Grieg, Ravel and Taccuchian have received great critical acclaim.
