On February 17th. 2015 Juho Pohjonen, the Finnish pianist will play, appropriately, music by Finnish composer Sibelius and also pieces by Ravel. Juho is making his second and very welcome visit to the Amigos. On February 19th. Juho will be joined by flutist, Sooyun Kim, playing Bach, Fauré, Schubert and Prokofiev.

 

Juho Pohjonen is regarded as one of Finland’s most intriguing and talented pianists. He has given recitals in Hamburg, Dresden, London (Wigmore Hall), Warsaw and many other cities and has performed with orchestras worldwide. He tours regularly with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Juho has been widely praised for his wide ranging repertoire from Bach to Salonen.

 

Juho began his studies in 1989 at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He has participated in master classes with Leon Fleischer and others and Sir András Schiff selected him as the winner of the Klavier Festival Ruhr Scholarship. During this season he will make his debut with Tonhalle-Orchestra in Zurich performing Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Piano Concerto. Juho’s debut record features a performance of Scandinavian composer Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s piano concerto “Plateaux pour Piano et Orchestra” with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and the solo piece “For Piano”.

 

Sooyun Kim is one of the rare flute soloists in the classical music scene. Since her concerto debut with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at age 10, she has enjoyed a flourishing career performing with orchestras around the world. She gave her European debut recital at the Auditorium du Louvre which resulted in immediate engagements for recitals in Germany, Finland, Denmark and Sweden. In the summer of 2012 Sooyun served as Artist in Residence with the Danish Chamber Players.

 

A winner of the George Solti Foundation Grant Sooyun became the first American since 1964 to win a top prize at Munich’s 2010 RD International Flute Competition at which she was also awarded a Special Prize for the best interpretation of a commissioned work by Bruno Mantovani. She also studied at the New England Conservatory. In addition to her musical training, she studied baroque dance with Melinda Sullivan. Sooyun is an Artist Member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
